Sorry I’m Late

Sorry I’m late

I’m sure you know

I was the last to leave

The long goodbyes turned

To a long stay

Longer than I intended

I should have answered

When you called

I regret that now

I can’t imagine how worried you’ve been

Look at the time (I’m 34)

Got to go

I’ve overstayed my welcome

Too drunk to read your texts

Or the hints from the host screaming

“Your presence here is off-putting.

You’re a cliché only useful as Exhibit AA.”

A poem that’s gone on too long

A party that never should have started

Now on line 20 when the story was told in three

It’s good to be home

Thanks for waiting up
